Eastern And Oriental Hotel
What to expect: Doormen dressed in Colonial-style outfits escort guests into this landmark hotel, which is set off the busy intersection of Farquhar Street and Penang Road. The peaceful lobby area features blues and jazz music piped into the background. A high dome-shaped ceiling in the forecourt is complemented by white-washed walls and marble floors. |
Amenity highlights: Since 1884, the hotel has hosted international elite including Douglas Fairbanks, Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, and Herman Hesse. The all-suite Colonial hotel also houses the country’s oldest functioning elevator with grilled doors. Along the hotel’s 750-foot promenade, which overlooks the sea, are small gardens, al fresco dining areas, and a swimming pool. Four cannons dating back to 1797 are also preserved here. |
Insider tip: A good way to explore the older parts of town is to have the hotel’s porter schedule a trishaw ride. Some trishaw riders can point out a few of the more significant buildings and landmarks.
